A minor setback to Longport has forced Brisbane trainer Dan Bougoure to alter her Melbourne spring carnival campaign.
Originally the Group One Myer Classic was the primary goal for Longport in Melbourne but the mare is now likely to resume in the Group Two Yellowglen Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day, November 2.
"She gave her leg a bump a couple of weeks ago so I had to go easy on her," Bougoure said.
"Rather than push her trying to get her to the Myer we just backed off her and decided to target the Salinger."
Bougoure hasn't ruled out a trip to Perth for Longport to contest the $1 million Group One Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot on November 23.
The five-year-old impressed Bougoure when she competed in a recent jump out on the course proper at Eagle Farm.
"Michael Cahill rode her and didn't knock her around but I thought she went super," he said.
A dual Group One placegetter as a three-year-old, Longport was part of Nathan Tinkler's Patinack Farm reduction sale in May, with Bougoure's client Steve Gillard paying $800,000.
Meanwhile trainer Kelly Schweida is no closer to settling on a comeback race for Better Than Ready after he suffered chest and leg injuries in a trackwork tumble in late September.
"He was back to being 100 per cent last Thursday and he'll start to do a bit of fast work this week," Schweida said.
"Where that puts us as far as finding a race for him goes is anyone's guess."
Better Than Ready's setback forced Schweida to abandon Schillaci and Manikato Stakes plans for the entire.
Schweida is reluctant to start Better Than Ready first up in the Group One Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) at Flemington on November 9.
"Going first up over 1200 metres at Flemington would be a bit like going 1400 metres so I'd say that race is out of the equation as well," he said.
Better Than Ready's long term Group One goal is next year's Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield.
