Toydini ready for Moonee Valley experience

Sunday 20 October 2013, 4:56pm

Toydini will take a traditional path towards his Melbourne Group One goal this spring but his Guy Walter-trained stablemate Zanbagh is on a less orthodox path to her target.

The winner of a fillies and mares maiden at Ballarat last Thursday week, Zanbagh will return there this Thursday for a restricted race to determine whether she takes aim at the VRC Oaks.

Walter had entered her for the Ethereal Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday but bypassed the 2000m race favour of a more gentle option.

The Ethereal was won by Arabian Gold who is trained by Walter's Warwick Farm neighbour David Vandyke and is an experienced Group filly.

"The Ethereal looked like a very strong race and turned out that way so we'll take her back to Ballarat," Walter said.

"She's in a 2000 metre 0-64 ratings race and we'll see what happens after that."

Zanbagh is out of the Walter-trained 2004 Australian Oaks winner Wild Iris and is raced by her breeders Sandy and Kathy Tait.

Toydini is also out of a mare Walter trained, Johan's Toy, runner-up in the 2005 Epsom Handicap and the Doncaster the following year.

He is also raced by his breeders, Bob and Jan Bergstrom.

The four-year-old will go to Moonee Valley on Tuesday for a gallop at the track ahead of Saturday's Group Two Crystal Mile, his lead-up to the Emirates Stakes two weeks later.

Earlier this month, Toydini finished a close third in the Epsom won by Boban from Streama, another Walter-trained horse.

The Chris Waller-trained Boban reinforced the Epsom form with victory in Saturday's Moonga Stakes at Caulfield.

"Toydini goes to Moonee Valley for the Breakfast with the Stars so he can get a look at the track," Walter said.

"He has come through the Epsom well and his target has always been the Emirates."

Toydini was gelded after his spring three-year-old campaign and the benefits were obvious in the autumn when he won two Group races.

He has had three starts this campaign for a close fifth in the Warwick Stakes, victory in the Cameron Handicap at Newcastle and his third in the Epsom.
