Kris Lees has confirmed plans for two of his stable stars over the Melbourne Cup carnival headed by in-form mare Sharnee Rose.
The last-start Angst Stakes winner will board a float bound for Melbourne on Saturday night with her mission the Group One Myer Classic at Flemington.
She will be joined by import Salon Soldier who will be aimed at a support race on Melbourne Cup day.
But of more immediate concern to Lees is the performance of two of his mares at Rosehill on Saturday, Gold Epona and Sweet Talkin Woman, who clash in the Oamps Insurance Brokers Handicap.
Gold Epona has form behind Sharnee Rose, finishing sixth to her over 1600 metres last start.
Before that she was a slashing second to Vaquera in the Tibbie Stakes at Newcastle, her home track.
Lees felt the distance of the Angst tested Gold Epona's stamina capabilities and has dropped her back in journey while also seeking weight relief through the 3kg claim of apprentice Yusuke Ichikawa.
"The other day she was in a winning position but she might have just struggled to run the 1600 metres out in that company," Lees said.
"I think she's well suited back to 1400. She has plenty of weight but she comes in well with the claim. She's got a bit of appeal there."
Sweet Talkin Woman comes into the race off a let-up but she has proven form first-up and at the trip.
Lees says the mare's physical appearance is the best it has ever been and believes she can be competitive with luck from her outside draw.
"She is capable fresh. She won at 1400 last preparation so it just depends on what sort of run she gets from the bad gate," he said.
Lees has had decent success with mares over many years, the most notable multiple Group One winner Samantha Miss.
His rejuvenation of Sharnee Rose, who came to him from Victoria as a classy mare who found it difficult to win, has been the latest advertisement for those skills.
He says maintaining routine for mares in form is important and he also credits the training environment and facilities at Newcastle.
