Shoreham racing to keep Cup hopes alive

Thursday 24 October 2013, 4:46pm

It's all or nothing for Shoreham when he's saddled up for the Group Two Moonee Valley Cup on Saturday.

A win will keep him in the running for a Melbourne Cup start but a defeat will put the stayer in a paddock for a long break.

Trainer Saab Hasan has been thrilled with the four-year-old gelding's recent form and believes the 2500m journey will suit him down to the ground.

He won the Galilee Final over 2500m in May and followed that up with a third in the Group One South Australian Derby over the distance in April behind Escado.

"We're going in reasonably confident, the horse is ready to run the distance and it's his favourite trip," Hasan said.

Shoreham had a workout at Moonee Valley on Tuesday over 1400m and pulled up well.

"We need to win convincingly to get a penalty and hopefully (chief handicapper) Greg Carpenter can see what I see in the horse and give us a guernsey," Hasan said.

"If he doesn't put his best foot forward he's going straight to the paddock because he hasn't had a long break and that can catch up with them."

Shoreham started his career at Mt Macedon under trainer Robert Hickmott and the ownership of Lloyd Williams.

The Australian-bred gelding was among a number of gallopers sold at a dispersal sale in May last year.
