QFighter confirms rise through the grades

Saturday 26 October 2013, 5:10pm

Leading trainer Matt Dunn is under pressure to give QFighter his chance in feature races after the gelding burst into open company at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

QFighter, backed from $4.40 to $3.90, charged home to beat the favourite Morning Captain ($2.80) by a half length with a length to veteran Ollie Vollie ($21) in third place in the Kartaway Miniskips Handicap (1200m).

It was the grey gelding's third win from his past four starts but his first against top opposition.

Dunn, who is a clear leader in the Brisbane trainers' premiership, has mixed feelings about QFighter's future.

He has no doubt Qfighter can one day make it in feature race-grade but he isn't just sure when.

"I must admit I am under pressure from some of the owners to put him in something a bit higher," he said.

"But I will have to have a good think about it.

"He needs a freshen up as he looked a bit hard in the enclosure today. After that I will have to decide whether we stay in this sort of company or go on to some of the summer sprints."

Dunn has done a great job with QFighter who has now won five of his 15 starts and more than $175,000 in prize money.

QFighter is a son of former top-flight mare Suzy Grey and like his mum QFighter can rattle off fast final sectionals.

Earlier, trainer Rob Heathcote was all smiles when Volkhere ($5.50) broke a mini drought for his stable in the Nugrow Handicap (2100m).

Heathcote had produced only one winner from his previous 50 runners in Queensland.

"You don't need me to tell you we have been having a dry run but things may have changed for the better here," said Heathcote who won the Group One Manikato Stakes with Buffering on Friday night.

Deagon trainer Darren Bell is set to have his first runner in the Magic Millions Classic (1200m) on January 8.

His filly Setfire To Therain won the Driver Recruitment Handicap (1000m) and landed some big bets in the process.

Corporate bookies bet $11 about Setfire To Therain on Thursday but by the time the field jumped the filly was at $2.80.

Setfire To Therain cost $16,000 at the Magic Millions QTIS Sale and has already returned $56,400.
