Recent Group-winning form has earned Sharnee Rose her place in Saturday's Myer Classic at Flemington but it is a mare she recently beat that trainer Kris Lees fears the most.
Sharnee Rose arrived in Melbourne on Sunday ahead of the 1600m Group One for fillies and mares having scored back-to-back Group Three wins in Sydney in the Golden Pendant (1400m) and Angst Stakes (1600m).
In the Golden Pendant she defeated the Chris Waller-trained Group One winner Red Tracer, the likely favourite in the Myer after a convincing Tristarc Stakes victory.
Sharnee Rose won the Angst Stakes at her most recent start with the runner-up Queenstown an easy winner at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
"The formlines are strong. It's the right formline going into this race," Lees said.
"Admittedly Red Tracer was first-up the day we beat her and had a tough run, so all in all if she runs out a strong mile I think she probably looks a good thing in the race.
"But I think we'll be competitive."
Red Tracer headlines 15 nominations for the race and is joined in the entries by stablemates Catkins and Arinosa.
Lees said Sharnee Rose, who started her career in Melbourne before joining the Newcastle trainer's stable earlier this year, deserved her shot in the Myer Classic after her Sydney campaign with Brenton Avdulla retaining the ride.
"She arrived in Melbourne in good order and I'm pleased how she's handled her recent racing," Lees said.
The trainer's biggest win in Melbourne so far has been the VRC Oaks with Samantha Miss in 2008.
That year the Lees-trained Absolutelyfabulous ran second in the Myer Classic to the Peter Snowden-trained Forensics.
Lees has also nominated import Salon Soldier for the Group One Mackinnon Stakes on Saturday but he will be saved for an 1800m race on Melbourne Cup day.
"It (the Mackinnon) looks even stronger than I expected," Lees said.
The $1 million Mackinnon (2000m) has attracted 23 entries including Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner, Toorak Handicap winner Solzhenitsyn, Cox Plate runner-up Happy Trails, dual Group One winner Foreteller and Caulfield Cup third placegetter Dear Demi and fourth-placed Jet Away.
