Jockey Laura Cheshire scored an emotional win aboard the well-related Thunder Set, and then hurried off to see her doctor for a final check on injuries which nearly ended her career 10 weeks ago.

The Yellowglen Maiden (2200m) at Eagle Farm on Wednesday had little pre-race appeal but produced a feelgood story.

Cheshire was all smiles after Thunder Set ($4.80) led all the way to score by 1-1/4 lengths from Joshua's Might ($9) with a length to Van Hooligan ($8) third.

It was a far cry from the day two-and-a-half months ago when she was laying in agony after a race fall at Casino.

She suffered such horrendous injuries in the August 11 mishap that many felt she may be forced into retirement.

She had a broken leg and back and rib and shoulder injuries.

"I was always determined to get back to riding and worked really hard on my rehabilitation. I came back last Saturday and rode a double at Casino," Cheshire said.

"I wanted my comeback to be at Casino to rid any demons."

Cheshire was just as keen to get to the metropolitan area at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.

She had to organise a post-race appointment with her doctor, one she hopes will be her last for a while.

"I just have to see him (the doctor) for one final time so I better get moving," she said.

Thunder Set is by Reset out of Miss Right Note making him a half brother to the now-retired multiple Group One winner Pierro.

But unlike his younger brother, who is by Lonhro and was syndicated to stud for around $25 million, there will be no off-track heroics for Thunder Set who is a gelding.

In fact, hobby trainer Vince Jones said he bought Thunder Set for a relative "song" and the five-year-old was having his 23rd start when he broke through for his first win on Wednesday.

Jones is based at Kempsey on the NSW mid north coast, but he is well known around several country racetracks having worked as a clerk of the course at Dubbo and Gosford.

"I have been around the races training them for 30 years. Sometimes I have three horses, sometimes one and sometimes none, but I have always been around horses" he said.

Jones gave credit to Cheshire for Thunder Set finally winning a race.

"When she got hurt I decided to keep him for her return," Jones said.
