Eclair Big Bang's Caulfield Guineas tilt came unstuck but trainer Phillip Stokes is expecting a better result in Saturday's Coolmore Stud Stakes.

The Stokes-trained Eclair Big Bang went to the Group One Caulfield Guineas (1600m) last start after winning the 1400m Prelude, but the gelding weakened in the straight after leading and failed to beat a runner home.

He has since been freshened and reverts to a sprint in Saturday's Group One Coolmore (1200m) which Stokes says should suit him better at this stage of his career.

"He had a bit of a freshen up-in the paddock after the Guineas, and nothing went right there (in the Guineas)," Stokes said.

"I probably learned a bit more about him and at this stage he's probably better suited to 1200 and 1400 metres with a bit of speed on."

Stokes also expects Eclair Big Bang to have learned from his first straight-track start at Flemington where he finished third, beaten a length, in the Group Two Danehill Stakes on September 7 three starts ago.

"I've always been upbeat about this horse," Stokes said.

"He's been up the straight before. He was a bit lost that day so that experience should help."

The Adelaide trainer, who has had spring carnival wins in Melbourne this year with Eclair Big Bang, Molto Bene and Hucklebuck, said Eclair Big Bang lost a shoe early in the Guineas, got buffeted and then over-raced.

"He just cooked himself early," he said.

Star colt Zoustar, winner of the Group One Golden Rose and Group Two Roman Consul Stakes at his past two starts, is the dominant $1.75 favourite for the Coolmore and the only runner under double figure odds in the field of 11.

Caulfield Guineas runner-up Divine Calling, lightly-raced Not Listenin'tome, and Golden Slipper runner-up Sidestep share the second line at $11.

Eclair Big Bang is a $21 chance.

If Zoustar confirms his odds-on favouritism with victory in the $500,000 race, it would give his jockey Jim Cassidy his 100th Group One success.
