Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Australia has claimed a double on the Melbourne Cup program with Moderate recording a Listed win at her first try at 1400 metres.
The filly went into the Lexus Hybrid Plate at Flemington off two midweek wins in Sydney and gave Kerrin McEvoy a couple of anxious moments at her first try in the anti-clockwise direction.
The plan wasn't to lead but when she jumped well, McEvoy kept her in a forward position and although she wobbled around the turn, she got the job done.
Trainer Peter Snowden praised his jockey's initiative and the filly's ability after she joined Wistful as a winner.
"She has only been down here a week and a half and it was all new to her," Snowden said.
"It wasn't quite how we planned it but she jumped well and our golden rule is if they start well to take advantage of that."
McEvoy, who rode for the Sheikh's Godolphin team in Europe, said it was always a thrill to win on a day such as Tuesday.
"It's great to be winning races on a big day like this," McEvoy said.
"Full credit to the team and to the filly who I think had more to give."
Snowden said Moderate would head to a race at the Sandown Guineas meeting being held this year at Caulfield on Saturday week.
