Gerald Ryan has always had a big opinion of Dothraki and the colt finally delivered a stakes win at Flemington after surviving a protest.

Dothraki ($12) stepped up to 1400m for the first time in Saturday's Listed Hilton Hotels & Resorts Stakes and got home by a long head from Suavito ($5) with Consorting ($4.40) the same margin away third.

The protest came from James Winks, rider of Suavito, who said Nash Rawiller on Dothraki shifted out five horses inside the final 150m before making contact with his mount.

"There's a bit of contact there and he's also struck my mount twice over the head with the whip," Winks told stewards.

Rawiller said Dothraki "stargazed" and labelled the contact as an "insignificant brush", arguing Suavito didn't lose momentum.

"In my opinion the best horse has held on and won the race," Rawiller told stewards.

Chief steward Terry Bailey said Suavito was put in restricted room for about 25 metres from the 75 metre mark, but wasn't convinced it made a difference to the result.

Dothraki claimed his first stakes win, having placed three times in black-type company including in two lead-ups to the Golden Slipper this year.

"I've always had a huge wrap on him. He's probably the only horse in the stable that can get anywhere near Snitzerland," Ryan said.

"He's just taken a while to put it together."

The trainer credited Sydney jockey Jay Ford for suggesting stepping Dothraki up in distance after the colt's last start third in the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.

"He said go to 1400 metres where there's less tempo and this was the only race I could find," Ryan said.

Ryan has ruled out next Saturday's Group Two Sandown Guineas (1600m) with Dothraki, which will return home to Sydney on Sunday night.
