Dwayne Dunn put in an "11 out of 10 ride" to get unheralded Girl Gone Rockin' home in a head-bobbing finish to deny the Gai Waterhouse-trained Queenstown victory in the Momentum Energy Stakes at Flemington.
Trainer Wayne Hawkes said the five-year-old mare was probably out of her depth in the field, but her value as a broodmare had just trebled with a Group Two win on her CV.
"Thirty yards to go I didn't think we were going to win and then right on the line she bobbed the right way," said Hawkes, part of the Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes team.
"If you lined her up for what she is eligible for, she's a bit out of her depth, and if Dwayne had hadn't given her an 11 out of 10 ride, she wouldn't have won."
Dunn had positioned Girl Gone Rockin' ($17) near unplaced favourite Lake Sententia ($3.80) early in the race and once in the straight looked to make up ground on the leaders in the 2000m trip.
Swooping from the middle of the track, he ran down Queenstown ($4.40) in a photo on the line with Keep De Rose ($12), which had made all the running, a half length away third.
"She really attacked the line nicely," Dunn said.
Girl Gone Rockin', which cost $300,000-plus as a yearling in New Zealand, gave a clue to her improving form with a close second to Dream Folk in her last start at the Randwick-Kensington track with Hugh Bowman aboard.
Hawkes said Girl Gone Rockin' would now be sent out to the paddock while they considered her future.
