Eden after big win with Apollo's Choice

The Sandown Guineas meeting at Caulfield looms as a milestone day for trainer Shea Eden.

Eden has Apollo's Choice in the Group Two Sandown Guineas (1600m) on Saturday as the up-and-coming trainer strives for his first stakes race win.

Apollo's Choice finished strongly for a close fourth to Dothraki in a 1400m Listed event at Flemington last Saturday.

"We made a decision after the race if he pulled up well, came home and ate up and ticked every box then we'd run in the Guineas," Eden said.

"He's done that so at this stage he'll be running."

Eden went close to a breakthrough stakes win when Zellindi was beaten by a nose in Listed company in Adelaide earlier this year.

"To have a live chance in not only a black-type race but a Group Two is exciting and it would just be a huge thrill if we can pull it off," Eden said.

"We've had a reputation for getting older horses with problems back to the track and finding their form, but now to be doing it with younger horses is important.

"Let's face it, they are the future and the only way you really find a good one is with a younger horse.

"It's just great for the stable to be able to have a horse of his ability."

Apollo's Choice was among 14 nominations on Monday for the $350,000 Guineas headlined by Carbine Club Stakes winner Paximadia who is one of two entries for trainer Peter Snowden.

Snowden has been a dominant force in recent Sandown Guineas with victories to Tatra (2012), Kidnapped (2009) and Caymans (2008).

Apollo's Choice won on debut at Benalla in May and returned with a first-up win at Kyneton before his half-length fourth at Flemington.

The colt over-raced and got into an awkward spot during Saturday's race and had to be checked mid-race before being held up for a run at the top of the straight. After switching off heels half-way up the straight he did his best work late.

"To still be able to finish off as well as he did was encouraging," Eden said.

Meanwhile, the Group Two Zipping Classic (2400m) attracted 12 nominations including the Queen Elizabeth Stakes quinella of Precedence and Sertorius.

Entries for the Zipping Classic and Sandown Guineas have been extended until Tuesday.
