Racing NSW's plan to introduce a new rule that would force vets to be licensed has been put on hold until the new year at the request of the state government.

The state's regulatory body said the regime, which was due to start on December 1 following months of negotiations, will now not come into play until January 15 of next year.

"Racing NSW has agreed to conduct further negotiations with the NSW Veterinary Practitioners Board in respect of the licensing regime to be implemented for veterinarians," a statement from Racing NSW said on Tuesday.

When implemented, the controversial rule will make vets who treat racehorses answerable to Racing NSW.

It has been unanimously rejected by veterinarians, who say it is not necessary because they are already licensed under the NSW Veterinary Practitioners Act.
