Esprit de Bullet called on his winning Adelaide form to produce a strong finish to score in the City Jeep Compass Handicap at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Overcoming an outside barrier, the eight-year-old gelding was forced seven wide on the home turn in order to launch his bid.

But with 100m left, Esprit de Bullet was rapidly closing in on the leaders and 50m later he had the race won.

At Esprit de Bullet's previous start at Moonee Valley, he started poorly and couldn't make up the ground before finishing sixth.

In the three previous races at Morphettville, he claimed two wins and a second and it was that form that he showed on Saturday.

While trainer John Hyam stayed at home, stable manager Darryl Carrison was trackside to collect the accolades.

Carrison said there were no plans to keep Esprit de Bullet in Melbourne despite the win.

"I think Johnny will take him back home," Carrison said.

"We were unlucky last start when he played up in the gates and missed the start so Johnny was keen to get him back for another crack."

Jockey Vlad Duric said he was focused on getting Esprit de Bullet away from the barriers in a safe manner.

"It was a nice smooth run in the race and he got away nicely," Duric said.

"I was smiling in the run. I was pretty happy and we were able to keep his momentum rolling around the corner and we chased in the straight and he was too good."

Esprit de Bullet ($8.50) beat home Vatican ($7.50) by three quarters of a length with Impulse Buy ($10) a nose away third.

Anudjawun made it a day to remember for the veterans when he posted just the second win of his 40-start career in the Art Series Hotel Group Handicap (3000m.

Also an eight-year-old, Anudjawun's only previous win came in a 1400-metre race at Ballarat in May, 2010.
