In a race designed to give Victorian youngsters a chance to perform in a clockwise direction, Sydney filly Sheer Style has come out on top.
Despite her experience racing in the opposite direction to Victoria, the odds-one favourite veered out on the home turn but fought on doggedly to win the $200,000 Magic Millions Clockwise Classic (1000m) at Ballarat.
Prize money earned counts towards a start in the $2 million Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast in January.
Sheer Style is trained at Hawkesbury by Garry Frazer who admitted he had been unaware of the race until a couple of weeks ago.
"It goes to show I should have been looking at the programs down here," Frazer said.
Sheer Style was favourite based on her last-start second to Earthquake, the nominal favourite for the Blue Diamond Stakes in February.
Ridden by Jason Collett, Sheer Style ($1.85) appeared to be headed by $14 chance Geromayo but rallied to beat her rival by a length.
"I'd say she wasn't really that comfortable on the heavy track," Frazer said.
"She's probably better on top of the ground. She can have a break now and we'll see where we end up."
Collett said Sheer Style could be a bit highly strung and may have shied at the winning post.
"That's her type of temperament," he said.
"She looks around a lot and in time might be a horse that appreciates the addition of blinkers.
"I said to Garry from day one she's natural early running type.
"She can be a bit nervy but today she was lovely and relaxed and took it all in."
Sheer Style was knocked down to Frazer for $255,000 at the Magic Millions sale, about $100,000 more than he had originally anticipated spending.
First prize money at Ballarat has taken her earnings to more than $153,000 from her three starts.
