Waikato Stud to sell all yearlings in NZ

Monday 25 November 2013, 2:20pm

Leading New Zealand breeder Waikato Stud will offer all its yearlings at the National Yearling Sale at Karaka.

Five times the leading breeder in New Zealand, Waikato Stud will have 80 horses catalogued for the sale in Auckland in January headed by progeny from their resident Group One sires O'Reilly, Pins, Savabeel and No Excuse Needed.

"We are very proud of our 2014 Yearling Draft, which is predominantly by our very own proven Group One sires," Mark Chittick, Waikato's owner and general manager, said.

"Waikato Stud is concentrating on Karaka for 2014 with our yearlings as we have found that the market has indicated that people do thoroughly enjoy buying off us at Karaka."

O'Reilly enjoyed an exceptional season in 2012/13 with Group One winners Sacred Falls (Doncaster Mile) and Shamexpress (Newmarket Handicap) flying the flag.

Savabeel was second to O'Reilly on the NZ sires' table last season and his son Sangster was named NZ's champion stayer.

Pins was named the champion sire of Hong Kong due mainly to the deeds of Hong Kong Horse of the Year Ambitious Dragon.

The commitment of all yearlings by Waikato Stud is a huge boost for the NZ Bloodstock National Yearling Sale Series, co-managing director Petrea Vela says.

Waikato Stud's draft will feature sons of Group One winners Glamour Puss and Legs and also a brother to multiple Group One winner and champion first season sire Alamosa.

The two-day Karaka Premier Sale begins on January 27.
