A horse who almost earned a spot on Paul Perry's Melbourne spring carnival team will carry his hopes at Rosehill on Saturday.
Smart sprinter Stratana will resume in the Bradford Solar Hcp (1100m), a race which has attracted a handy field headed by proven stakes performers News Alert, Uate and the speedy Welkom Gold.
Perry will be at Flemington to saddle up last start Moonee Valley winner Hidden Warrior in the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) but he will be keenly watching the performance of Stratana.
"He's been in work for a while," Perry said.
"We half planned to send him to Melbourne but he had a little hiccup here and there so we didn't, but everything is in line with him now.
"It will be interesting to see what he does on Saturday.
"He's real well within himself, although usually a run or so helps him."
Stratana is a triple stakes placegetter and finished third in the Razor Sharp Handicap at Warwick Farm last December.
With few options now remaining for him in Melbourne, Perry says that race is again his likely summer target.
A lightly-raced five-year-old who has won five of his 13 starts, Perry believes this campaign could well be Stratana's best.
"I'd say that. He's a nicer horse now," Perry said.
"He's been well looked after."
Apprentice Alysha Collett takes the ride.
Her bother and fellow jockey Jason will partner Uate who showed enormous promise as a two-year-old when he finished second to Helmet in the 2011 Group One Sires' Produce Stakes.
He has only had two light campaigns since then but after resuming with an unplaced run behind the Perry-trained Social Rank in September, Uate showed a glimpse of form last start when fourth to Famous Seamus in the Listed Lightning Handicap.
The Kris Lees-trained Uate was the equal $4.60 second pick with TAB fixed odds on Thursday, along with Stratana.
Didntcostalot, returning from a three-start Melbourne campaign which included a midweek win at Sandown in August, is favourite at $3.20.
The Lidoran Group Plate (1100m) for two-year-olds has attracted a field of eight with last start winner Sweet Idea the $1.95 favourite.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained youngster will face a couple of nicely bred rivals in the David Payne-trained pair of Criterion and Stiff Thunder.
Criterion ($4.20) is a half brother to stakeswinners Varenna Miss and Silently, while Stiff Thunder ($26) is a half brother to this year's Magic Millions Classic placegetter Alezan Thunder.
