Mornington trainer Neil Walsh is convinced middle-distance performer Zuma Roc will have enough zip in his legs to be a first-up factor at Caulfield.
Zuma Roc is at his best over more ground but Walsh says he won't be surprised to see the five-year-old running on in the LUCRF Super Handicap (1440m) on Saturday.
Burdened with 61.5kg, Zuma Roc is a $17 chance in early markets to start his summer campaign on a winning note.
The gelding warmed up for his return with a Cranbourne barrier trial placing behind the smart galloper Chase The Rainbow.
"His trial at Cranbourne was very good and he'll be very competitive on Saturday," Walsh said.
"I would expect him to be in the finish, hitting the line."
As a pointer to his Caulfield chances, Zuma Roc resumed from a 23-week spell with a five-length win in a 1400-metre race at Tatura in June.
"He was very dominant fresh over 1400 metres last time," Walsh said.
"It's a starting point, but his best is probably between a mile and 2000 metres."
Walsh has been patient with Zuma Roc, adopting a conservative approach to such an extent he kept the horse away from spring carnival action to concentrate on a summer campaign against easier opposition.
"He is always going to get better with age," Walsh said.
Melbourne's wet weather has Walsh worried but he is hoping Caulfield can dry out in time for Zuma Roc to race well.
In three starts on rain-affected surfaces, Zuma Roc hasn't been able to finish any closer than eight lengths from the winner.
A Thursday morning track inspection put Caulfield in the slow range after more than 34mm of rain for the week.
"He's a bit of a drought breaker but Caulfield drains pretty well," Walsh said.
If Zuma Roc can race up to Walsh's expectations, he will target the $120,000 Listed Lord Stakes (1600m) at Mornington on December 29.
