There will be no over-indulgence for Glyn Schofield this Christmas as he prepares to add to his Summer Cup record at Randwick on Boxing Day.
Schofield has rides in five of the eight races, two of them on the 54kg minimum.
As a result, Christmas Day will be more about family than feasting.
"I won't be eating as much food as I'd like," Schofield said.
"We normally have a lunch at Christmas. Hopefully I will be able to put something down my throat."
Schofield's mounts include the aptly named Midsummer Sun for trainer Sam Kavanagh in the feature race on Thursday, the Group Three Summer Cup.
Usually held over 2400 metres, the race has figured in a distance change and will be staged over 2000 metres for the first time in its 123-year history.
It has resulted in a handy field headed by last-start winner Travolta, Darley's progressive gelding Solemn and Destiny's Kiss, an eye-catching sixth in the Villiers Stakes after being held up for a run in the straight.
Midsummer Sun also boasts strong formlines through the spring carnival in Melbourne.
He was runner-up to the ill-fated Salon Soldier at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day and ran fourth to Sertorius in the Zipping Classic at Caulfield on November 16.
"The horse performed well over the carnival in Melbourne and if he can bring that form to the Summer Cup on Thursday he'll be hard to beat," Schofield said.
Schofield will be chasing his third Summer Cup in the past six years after victories aboard Ready To Lift in 2008 and Le Roi 12 months ago.
Midsummer Sun will have to overcome an extended break between runs to add to that tally, but after partnering the gelding in a trackwork gallop Schofield is satisfied the horse is on target.
"He's had five weeks between runs, which isn't ideal," Schofield said.
"But he had a good gallop, a solid gallop on the course proper last week."
Kavanagh will be looking for Midsummer Sun to deliver his first stakes success in Sydney since relocating from Adelaide at the start of the season.
