South Australian trainer Richard Jolly elected to stay at home but his gelding Karacatis did all the talking with a stirring win in the feature race at Caulfield on Boxing Day.
Teenage jockey Damian Lane said far from showing a lack of confidence by not accompanying his horse to Melbourne, Jolly sent Karacatis over because he knew the horse was a good chance in the $120,000 Listed Christmas Stakes (1200m).
It was an intelligent ride from Lane who got Karacatis to the front on the rails within the first 300m and kept him there despite a number of strong challenges.
"The more they came to him the more he kept pulling out," Lane said.
"It was a tough win. Leading is probably not his best role.
"I was told to ride him fourth or fifth but when you lob that easily like he did, it would be silly to hold him back."
As Karacatis ($8) stretched for the line, Richie's Vibe ($6) made a final lunge for victory but missed by a short half head.
Peter Moody's five-year-old mare Kneeling ($18) was third another long head away.
Lane said the victory by Karacatis was a training coup for Jolly who didn't travel horses interstate lightly.
"Richard is a very good trainer and when he sends them over here, they are here for a reason," Lane said.
The race was a disappointment for connections of Chase The Rainbow who was resuming after more than 12 months on the sidelines with injury.
The Group Two winner finished last in the field of 11, beaten 20 lengths.
It was a better afternoon at Caulfield for Ballarat trainer Darren Weir who showed he wasn't suffering any effects from his Christmas Day festivities to notch his second city treble this season.
Weir celebrated a triple treat in August when stablemates Clang A Bang, Gotta Take Care and Broken won on the same day at Moonee Valley.
He repeated that effort at Caulfield on Thursday with Rainbow Storm ($7), So Hasty ($4.60) and $5 equal favourite Flying Hostess all scoring wins on the Boxing Day program.
