Munce's key mounts draw wide at Doomben

BRISBANE Dec 27 AAP - Champion jockey Chris Munce admits he will have to be at the top of his when he resumes from a short break with two key rides at Doomben on Saturday.

The four-time Brisbane premiership-winning jockey had a rare break over Christmas after being suspended for the first time in three years at Ipswich two weeks ago.

Munce spent Boxing Day with his family but it will be all business come Saturday when he has two important rides aboard the Gai Waterhouse-trained Echo Gal in the B J McLachlan Stakes (1200m) and Into The Red in the Vo Rogue Plate (1350m).

Echo Gal, who won her only start at Warwick Farm on December 11, has drawn barrier nine in a field of 10 for the McLachlan, an important Magic Millions lead-up.

Munce said the run to the first turn would be crucial.

"It is no bonus to be drawn there at Doomben," he said.

"There looks to be a lot of pace inside her and I will be looking for a good position in the run to the first turn.

"One thing you have to take into account is Echo Gal is trained by Gai. Her horses are always really fit so a few of the others will want to have improved to beat her."

Echo Gal is among the favourites for the Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast on January 11.

Munce has won the race three times, twice for Waterhouse aboard Dance Hero and Excellerator, but regardless of Saturday's result Tommy Berry will partner Echo Gal in the $2 million race.

The No.1 stable rider for Waterhouse, Berry is serving a riding suspension but will return in time for the Magic Millions carnival.

Munce's Vo Rogue Plate mount Into The Red is double figure odds after drawing the outside barrier in a field of 15.

"What can you do? At least from the 1350-metres at Doomben you get a decent run to the first turn," Munce said.

"We will just have to see how the race pans out but I will be looking for cover."

Munce indicated he would be sticking with Into The Red for the Magic Millions Guineas.

"Those ignoring him in Millions discussions must know something I don't. He is pretty smart," Munce said.
