Bookmakers have Invisible in their sights

Sunday 29 December 2013, 5:17pm

Bookmakers have reacted swiftly to the debut win of Invisible, promoting him to equal favouritism for the Magic Millions.

Before he raced at Canterbury on Saturday, the colt was a $31 chance for the $2 million race on January 11 at the Gold Coast.

He is now at $4 alongside the more experienced Unencumbered, the winner of the more traditional Magic Millions lead-up, the B J McLachlan at Doomben a few hours after the Canterbury race.

A product of the first crop by All American, Invisible cost $280,000 at this year's Magic Millions sale and has been produced with a sense of timing by the Hawkes family training partnership.

He won a barrier trial last Tuesday to confirm his racetrack debut and showed race sense and maturity beyond his experience.

"He ticked all the boxes at the sales and stood out as an A-grader which is why we paid $280,000 for him off a $10,000 service fee for the stallion," co-trainer Michael Hawkes said.

The Bjorn Baker-trained Unencumbered was much less expensive at $70,000 and has earned more than $380,000 for a group which includes many first-time owners.

He has won four of his five starts with jockey Nathan Berry boasting a perfect record on the colt.

Former Millions favourite Echo Gal will be monitored over the next few days after she was found to have the thumps following her unplaced run in the McLachlan.

The thumps is described as a diaphragmatic spasm causing laboured breathing but horses can recover quickly.

The Bryan Guy-trained Stroak was the surprise runner-up to Unencumbered at Doomben, firming from $41 to $13.

Guy believes she is a genuine chance in the Millions with the advantage of the race being held on her home track.

"A couple of more bounds and we get Unencumbered. It gives me plenty of hope for the Magic Millions provided we draw a decent alley," Guy said.

One of the leading chances for the $1 million Magic Millions Guineas, Charlie Boy, will have a barrier trial on Friday in Sydney with race jockey Michael Rodd aboard.

He is a $9 chance with the Gai Waterhouse-trained Sweet Idea the $4.450 favourite to go one better than she did in this year's Classic.
