Flamberge claims Standish for Moody, Duric

Wednesday 1 January 2014, 6:05pm

Premier trainer Peter Moody and jockey Vlad Duric started the new year in style at Flemington with winning doubles highlighted by the Group Three Standish Handicap victory to Flamberge.

Moody took out Victoria's final stakes race for 2013 at Mornington on Sunday with Oregon Spirit and started 2014 on the right note with Flamberge ($6) powering to a 2-1/4 length success over favourite Essay Raider ($4.40) with Decircles ($7) three-quarters of a length away third.

Moody, who was in Queensland inspecting yearlings, had earlier prepared outsider Spirits Dance to win the opening race while Duric was successful on the Shawn Mathrick-trained Gig.

Flamberge had been aimed at the Standish (1200m) because of his liking for the Flemington straight track and the sprinter bounced back from a last-start fifth to claim the feature on the New Year's Day program.

Duric said his confidence grew as rain started to fall during the day because Flamberge had won two from three on wet tracks.

"It's great for Pete to kick off the year so well," Duric said.

"I think the key to him (Flamberge) today was that he began well and settled beautifully in the run.

"He had a horse to follow in Decircles and switched off nicely which helped him, and the fact he had a bit of rain played into his favour."

The victory was Flamberge's third from five attempts at Flemington and he is the latest from the family to relish straight-track racing.

Flamberge's half-brother Sunburnt Land won a Straight Six at Flemington and was placed in both the Salinger Stakes and Patinack Farm Classic in 2008.

His full-sister Curtana won two Listed races at Flemington and was second to Star Witness in the 2010 Coolmore Stud Stakes.

Moody is second in the Melbourne trainers' premiership behind Darren Weir who also prepared a winner on the program with Anlon defeating the Chris Waller-trained import He's Your Man in the George Watson Handicap (1400m).

Irish apprentice Oisin Murphy took the spotlight in the Listed Bagot Handicap, piloting the Nigel Blackiston-trained Outback Joe to victory in the 2800m race.
