Katelyn Mallyon has wasted no time in cementing a new partnership with the Flemington training team of Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra.
The champion apprentice is on a three-month loan to the stable and she made a flying start when guiding Spellrocker to an all-the-way win in the Lisa Clarence Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
Mallyon said her stint could be extended if the move continued to work out.
"If I keep going and I like it there I will definitely stay," she said.
Mallyon delivered "catch-me-if-you-can" tactics to the letter as Spellrocker ($13) held off the favourite Flying Hostess ($2.30) to win by a long head.
In a tight finish, Roxanne Of Sydney ($10) was another long head away third.
"She can sustain a good gallop and I knew if I could get the others off the bit with just 52kg on her back she would be very hard to catch," said Mallyon.
Ellerton said he and Zahra had interviewed a number of more experienced jockeys but they weren't the right fit for the Flemington-based team.
"With Katelyn she can ride light, she's a worker, great to deal with and listens to everything you say," he said.
