Jockey Tim Bell declared well-supported The Ringmaster beat himself when runner-up in the $75,000 Bat Out Of Hell at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
The Ringmaster was backed from $12 into $8.50 on course after as much as $16 was bet during the week by corporate bookmakers.
He finished strongly to be second, three-quarters of a length behind comeback galloper Plateau Gold ($17) with the same margin to All That ($9) in third place.
"Coming to the home turn I thought we would win easily but in the straight he wanted to hang," Bell said.
"Once I got him straightened he really hit the line but he beat himself."
Plateau Gold's win was a credit to Coffs Harbour trainer Jim Jarvis who has been patient with the gelding after he suffered a hairline fracture in a leg joint last year.
"The vet said give him six months and in the end we gave him 12 months," Jarvis said.
Meanwhile, apprentice Rikki Jamieson scored the biggest win of her career when she rode Flight King ($5.50) to win the $85,000 GCTC Ladies Day Three-Year-Old Handicap.
Trainer David Kelly will spell Flight King for six weeks before setting him for feature races.
"I have a big opinion of him and I think he can take the step up," Kelly said.
