Charlie Boy's physical fitness heading first-up into the Magic Millions Guineas is of no concern to Gerald Ryan but the trainer admits the colt's mental attitude can be a worry.

The Danehill Stakes winner steps out over 1400 metres in Saturday's $1 million race at the Gold Coast in what will be his first start since early October when he finished midfield in the Caulfield Guineas.

Charlie Boy has been given two barrier trials to get him ready, the most recent on Friday with race jockey Michael Rodd pleased with his third behind Number One Gun.

"He pulled up terrific from the trial and his fitness is no problem," Ryan said.

"But if the colty Charlie Boy turns up that can be a concern.

"Sometimes when he is like that he can be hard to get to the barriers. He's right once he's in there but before the race he can be a handful."

Charlie Boy had a three-start spring campaign in Melbourne, winning the Group Two Danehill Stakes (1200m) before running fourth in the Guineas Prelude in the lead-up to the Group One.

His debut win in November 2012 gave him the distinction of being the first southern hemisphere winner for his sire Myboycharlie but the rest of his two-year-old campaign didn't go quite to plan.

He was an unlucky third in the Silver Slipper won by Sweet Idea, the favourite for the Magic Millions Guineas, and fourth in the Todman Stakes when he pulled hard during the race.

He ran midfield in the Golden Slipper and again in the Sires' Produce Stakes.

Charlie Boy is the third favourite for the Magic Millions Guineas at $7 with TAB behind Sweet Idea at $4.20 and Enquare at $5.

The barrier draw for the 16 horse field plus five emergencies will be decided on Tuesday morning.
