While the big money is being splashed around at the Magic Millions sale, trainer Marc Conners heads to Warwick Farm with a horse who is proof there are bargains to be had.
Didntcostalot was a $3000 yearling at the 2008 Gold Coast sale and victory in Saturday's Warwick Farm Handicap (1000m) will take his earnings past $250,000.
"It's what Australian racing is all about," Conners said.
"We have had great fun with him."
Didntcostalot, who will carry 60.5kg in the benchmark 90 sprint, has the services of the in-form Brenton Avdulla and goes into the race off a last-start win at Randwick.
"He has carried weight before so it's not too much of a concern," Conners said.
"He is a hard horse to place now and there are only two tracks in Sydney - Warwick Farm and Randwick - that have 1000 metre races.
"There aren't enough of them so all going well, he will head to Melbourne after tomorrow to run in a 1000 metre Listed race at Caulfield on the first of February.
"He has travelled to Melbourne and Brisbane before and acquitted himself well."
Conners will also have Letchworth racing on his home track with apprentice Lester Grace his pilot in the tab.com.au Handicap (1600m).
"I also had him entered for Canterbury next week but I think I will run him at home," Conners said.
"I would have preferred a bit of rain but it doesn't look as if that's going to happen."
Conners took time out from the Gold Coast sale to return to Sydney to watch two-year-old filly Pennard win a barrier trial at Warwick Farm on Friday.
"I was originally trying to get her ready for next week's Inglis Classic," Conners said.
"But she got galloped on and I've run out of time.
"She is a really nice filly and I've got the better races in mind for her so I didn't want to rush things."
Didntcostalot is the TAB's early $4.40 favourite ahead of Tahitian Black at $4.80 while Letchworth is a $16 chance in his event.
