Saturday's Flemington winner Miss Maggiebeel is proof that bargains can still be found in racing.
A $13,000 purchase at the 2012 Melbourne Autumn Sales, the filly proved too strong for her more experienced rivals to win the Nouvelle Star Handicap (1400m) for three-year-old fillies.
Co-trainer Simon Zahra said Miss Maggiebeel, who was having her third start, was from a solid racing family with her mother Stabeel producing five winners from seven foals to race.
"I loved her at the sale and thought something must be wrong because she was so cheap," Zahra said.
"You don't have to go to the Gold Coast and spend a lot of money.
"Just have a look around and if you can find the right one they will pay you back."
Mamwaazel ($4.60) looked to have the race in her keeping before Miss Maggiebeel ($7), with in-form apprentice Katelyn Mallyon aboard, accelerated down the outside and ran down the frontrunner to score by 1-1/4 lengths.
Ready Cuz ($26) was the same margin away third.
