Improved racing manners have helped the in-form Nesbo capture his first Saturday metropolitan win in the Straight Draw Handicap at Flemington.
Darren Tymms, assistant manager to trainer Mick Kent as well as being a Melbourne podiatrist, said the work invested in improving Nesbo's racing manners was starting to pay dividends.
"He was laying in at times early in his prep," Tymms said.
"He's a lovely type of horse who will improve next preparation."
Nesbo ($6.50) settled midfield and made his move just before the 400-metre mark as the field straightened for the run home.
He got to frontrunner and eventual third placegetter Adirondack ($6) halfway down the straight then staved off the fast-finishing Correggio ($51) to win the 1700-metre event by a short head.
The victory was Nesbo's second in succession after a Christmas Eve win at Sale.
Tymms believes the four-year-old can continue to improve as his distances are increased.
"We'll probably just run him through his grades and see where he gets to," Tymms said.
"He has ability and if his manners keep improving then hopefully we can get to Listed type company."
Jockey Brad Rawiller said Nesbo had the race wrapped up when he accelerated shortly after balancing up for the run home.
"His turn of foot at the top of the straight put the race in his keeping," Rawiller said.
"He is typical of Mick Kent horses that can sustain their sprint."
