The Mornington Cup is among the options for Angola who broke through for his first win in almost 10 months at Flemington on Saturday.
Trainer Pat Carey praised the ride of Chris Symons who had Angola perfectly positioned behind the speed in the Rain Lover Handicap (2500m) before the five-year-old chimed in at the right time for a grinding win.
Angola ($6) defeated Gottino ($8) by a length with Reigning ($12) a long neck away third.
"He had a beautiful, charmed run," Carey said.
"It was just timed to perfection. He's been threatening to win a race like this for a while."
Angola is a son of Helenus who died in April last year from complications during surgery.
Carey has won Group One races with Ethiopia and Cedarberg, both sons of Helenus.
The trainer said there were plenty of Saturday-class staying races in Melbourne that would suit Angola while also confirming next month's $350,000 Mornington Cup (2400m) as an option.
The Flemington victory was Angola's first since March last year when he won over 2400-metres at Bendigo.
The gelding bled that day and incurred a three month ban.
Symons said he learned from his first ride on Angola in the Listed Bagot Handicap on New Year's Day that it was important to get cover because the horse had a tendency to pull hard.
"He made me work for it," Symons said.
