Undeniably is an experiment but one worth his $58,000 price tag says young trainer Todd Balfour of his newest stable member.
The experienced stakes winner will have his first outing under Balfour at Flemington on Saturday in the Listed Kensington Stakes (100m) in tough company that includes First Command who is aiming to win the race for the third time.
The seven-year-old Undeniably, formerly trained by Mark Kavanagh, won the Listed Christmas Stakes in 2012 and last year finished fourth in the Oakleigh Plate and Newmarket Handicap at Group One level.
Balfour, who bought Undeniably at the Inglis December Thoroughbred Sale, admitted he would not be able to improve on Kavanagh's training techniques but hoped the change of environment to his Cranbourne stable would get the horse back in a winning frame of mind.
He takes Undeniably to nearby beaches at Corinella and Carrum as well as jumping him over logs at the Tooradin Pony Club.
"He also chases kangaroos, so it's totally different stuff," Balfour said.
Balfour used to be a jumps jockey and worked for Kavanagh as a track rider when the trainer was starting out at Mt Gambier and Adelaide.
"I'm never going to improve him on Mark Kavanagh. I can only do something a bit different," Balfour said.
"We're going to learn a lot from Saturday and I would like to see him running on in the end."
Craig Williams will ride Undeniably and Balfour says there is no better jockey to give him a run-down after the race.
"He can tell us what we might be able to do or try. It's a big experiment but it's worth the gamble," Balfour said.
Balfour says that if Undeniably can surprise with a win on Saturday then he might consider a third shot at the Oakleigh Plate as well as the Group One Goodwood in Adelaide and the Listed Wangoom Handicap at Warrnambool.
"It's great having a horse of this quality in the stable," he said.
