Stakes winner Maules Creek is showing new trainers Peter Morgan and Craig Widdison he still has a zest for racing ahead of his second run for the pair at Flemington on Saturday.
The duo bought the former John Thompson-trained six-year-old at a Patinack Farm dispersal sale for $70,000 and he'll contest the Piping Lane Hanicap (2000m) with Stephen Baster on board.
"He seems like he still wants to be a racehorse," Widdison said.
"He is pretty sound for an older horse."
Maules Creek made his first start for the Victorian trainers at Flemington on New Year's Day after a 31-week absence from the track and only beat two horses home in a field of nine over 1400 metres under Baster.
Widdison said one of the new owners was a fan of Maules Creek and thought he still had some racing left in him.
"Stephen Baster was happy with his first-up run but thought he was looking for further ground," he said.
"He stuck right to the line but he's a bit one-paced.
"When Stephen asked him to sprint he couldn't do it so he's definitely looking for a longer trip."
Maules Creek's last win - under Sydney-based Thompson - was the Listed Randwick City Quality (2000m) in March, 2012.
Meanwhile, Widdison said Penang Trophy winner Star Rolling was likely to resume on Saturday week at Caulfield, after a 15-week spell, in the Listed John Dillon Stakes.
They decided to rest Star Rolling after his fifth in the Cranbourne Cup on October 13.
"He had four starts in that prep with only three weeks off so we thought he had done enough," he said.
Morgan and Widdison are planning an autumn campaign for Star Rolling with the aim the Group One Australian Cup at Flemington in March.
"We're not sure yet which path we'll take yet but it starts next Saturday and we would probably have around three lead-up races," said Widdison.
