BRISBANE Jan 19 AAP - Queensland's "best kept secret" Geoff Goold is not the usual apprentice jockey.
Goold, who outrode his 3kg claim last week, took a rails run to drive Little Brown Horse home in Saturday's Gallopers Sports Club Hcp (1350m).
It led Gary Doughty, the husband of Little Brown Horse's trainer Kelly Doughty and a Group One winning jockey, to declare Goold the best apprentice in Queensland.
"Geoff is the best kept secret here. He has never ridden a bad race for us" Doughty said.
Goold is certainly not the run of the mill apprentice.
He is 31 years-old with two children and qualified as an agricultural scientist before he taking up riding.
"I was always interested in horses but my father was keen for me to get a tertiary education and I ended up doing a diploma degree in animal husbandry," Goold said.
"Then I started out riding some track work and met my partner Emma who is the daughter of trainer Jim Herriot," Goold said.
Herriot is based at Caloundra and when Goold moved there he started riding work for trainer Mick Mair.
"Then I thought I might have a go at riding in races. At first I was just keen to outride my four kilogram allowance just so I wouldn't make a fool of myself.
"Then I won the Toowoomba apprentices title in 2012 and last year I was leading apprentice at Caloundra."
Goold is now concentrating on the metropolitan area where he has ridden 21 winners and is fast getting the backing of some top trainers.
"I have 18 months to go in my apprenticeship. Like most young blokes I used to treat riding for fun but now I have two kids it changes everything," Goold said.
He will ride at Eagle Farm on Saturday and is hoping to pick up a good ride in the $100,000 Sunshine Coast Cup (1400m) at Caloundra the following day.
