Entries taken for Melbourne autumn feature

Tuesday 21 January 2014, 6:06pm

Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente, Cox Plate winner Shamus Award and Victoria Derby winner Polanski head the 58 horses who have been entered for the $1 million Australian Cup.

Shamus Award is among 11 three-year-olds entered for the Group One Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 8 but trainer Danny O'Brien has indicated the Australian Guineas a week earlier is the main target.

Chris Waller is the most heavily-represented trainer with six entries in the weight-for-age Australian Cup including Group One winners Hawkspur and Foreteller.

Both David Hayes and Anthony Cummings have five entries apiece.

Trainers who missed the nomination deadline have until Friday to pay a $1650 late entry fee, while first acceptances will be taken on February 18.

Nominations also closed on Tuesday for two other Group One races - the $500,000 Australian Guineas (1600m) on March 1 and the $1 million Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on March 8.

Polanksi and Shamus Award are also among the 85 horses nominated for the Australian Guineas.

A strong threat could come from New Zealand dual Group One winner Recite who beat her male counterparts in the Levin Classic last start to take her record to five wins from nine starts.

High profile colt Zoustar is among the Newmarket entries but plans are for the Chris Waller-trained three-year-old to do his autumn racing in Sydney before tackling Europe's best in an English campaign mid-year.

There were 60 entries for the Newmarket headed by the O'Brien-trained Shamexpress who will bid to defend his title.
