Florida takes new route to win at Doomben

Wednesday 22 January 2014, 5:18pm

BRISBANE Jan 22 AAP - Trainer Bryan Guy was so desperate for Florida Fellow to break his city duck on Wednesday he even changed the route the horse took to the Doomben racetrack.

Florida Fellow had won eight races prior to Wednesday but seven of those were at the Gold Coast and the other at Ipswich.

However, Florida Fellow hadn't won a race in 10 starts at Doomben and Brisbane's other metropolitan track Eagle Farm.

Ridden by Janette Johnson, Florida Fellow ($4) changed all that when he beat Astronomer ($2.80) by three-quarters of a length with Basha ($4) the same margin away third in the Drumbeats @ Lyndhurst Hcp (1010m).

Guy admitted he was fast despairing of Florida Fellow winning a city race.

"We even thought he might be getting air sick going over the Gateway Bridge (the tallest bridge in Queensland) to get here," he said.

"So today we brought him the other way by the flat route."

Whether it was the new route or not Florida Fellow showed a lot of heart to win.

"They all say he is just a Gold Coast horse and he does like it there. But he has had no luck a few times at other tracks," Guy said.

"I thought he would be hard to beat because his last start in the Magic Millions Sprint he got flattened early and then caught deep."

Johnson, who is apprenticed to Guy, has a great association with Florida Fellow having now ridden him to eight wins with seven of those at the Gold Coast.

Meanwhile, three-year-old Newpilio ($2.70) showed he was a future star when he came from third last to win the PowerAde Maiden (1350m).

Trainer Liam Birchley will probably spell Newpilio and bring him back in the winter.

"He is a big dope at the moment. When he matures he will some horse," Birchley said.

Winning jockey Ryan Wiggins confirmed Newpilio would be a future horse to follow.

"We were going no where at the 600m but when he got clear he really finished quickly," Wiggins said.

Trainer Tony Gollan believes Bush Aviator ($4.20) will develop into a handy "miler" after winning the Mullins Lawyers Class 5 (1615m).

Bush Aviator won the Listed Elwick Stakes in Hobart at his first start for trainer Danny O'Brien but he lost form and was sent to Gollan at Eagle Farm.
