McEvoy targets Oakleigh Plate with Iconic

Friday 24 January 2014, 12:26pm

Tony McEvoy has one of Melbourne's feature sprints in his sights with three-year-old Iconic.

Iconic makes his return in Saturday's City Of Glen Eira Handicap (1000m) at Caulfield and McEvoy is keen to give the gelding a chance to earn an Oakleigh Plate start next month.

"If he comes back as well as I expect I will try to get him into an Oakleigh Plate," McEvoy said.

"It's an aggressive plan for a three-year-old but I've got a bit of time for him. He's a nice sprinter I think."

Iconic has close family ties to Black Caviar.

He is by the same sire Bel Esprit and his dam Danavia is a half-sister to Black Caviar's dam Helsinge.

Iconic has three wins and three seconds to his credit from eight starts and hasn't raced since he finished second to Bernabeu in a 1000m three-year-old handicap at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day.

McEvoy said the gelding was unlucky and "clearly should have won that race".

"He got pole-axed twice out of the barriers and did great job to get as close as he did," McEvoy said.

Iconic was an impressive first-up winner last campaign over 1000m at Caulfield, coming from last to beat Villa Verde by half a length.

He is the $2.60 favourite to win first-up again and McEvoy insists Iconic is forward enough for Saturday's assignment.

"He's ready to go," he said.
