An upset win in the John Dillon Stakes on Finishing Card capped a big day at Caulfield for star apprentice Chad Schofield.
The victory aboard the Clinton McDonald-trained Finishing Card in the 1400m Listed race gave Schofield a winning treble on Saturday.
Seven-year-old Finishing Card ($17), backing up from a third to Decirles over 1400m at Flemington last Saturday, sat just behind the leader and favourite Limes ($2.90) in the run before making his challenge turning for home.
He stuck to his task in the straight and got his head down at the right time to defeat Limes by half a head in a three-way finish.
Group Two-winning galloper Chase The Rainbow ($5.50) sat closer to the speed than his last start and came in another short head away third.
Schofield has only just returned from his most recent careless riding suspension and made the most of a solid book of rides to also post wins on the resuming Borsay in the City Of Glen Eira Handicap (1000m) and the Peter Moody-trained Spirits Dance in the Vaughan Webb Handicap (1100m).
"It's only my second meeting back from suspension so it's good to get the ball rolling now and hopefully I can get a bit of momentum heading into the carnival," Schofield said.
Finishing Card scored his first win since Boxing Day in 2012 and his first in stakes company.
McDonald rates Schofield as "the next future champion" while he said Finishing Card had been a good horse for his owners.
"He's no superstar but he's just a good solid Saturday-class horse and he was in the right place at the right time today," McDonald said.
While Schofield took riding honours, fellow apprentice Jye McNeil notched a milestone with his first city double.
McNeil, 19, won on the Darren Weir-trained Means A Lot and then brought up his double on the Sharna Valli-trained stayer Use The Lot who won over 1800m in the Roy Higgins & Wylie Dalziel Racing Handicap.
