Rain Affair shows positive signs in trial

The big winning margin told part of the story.

But Rain Affair's behaviour and the way he went about his work was even more telling as he satisfied trainer Joe Pride and jockey Corey Brown he was back to his best in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm on Friday.

"That's what I wanted to see," Pride said after Rain Affair raced to an all-the-way five-length win in a 795m heat in 46 seconds.

"He flew the gates too, which is a great sign."

A quick chat with Rain Affair's jockey confirmed Pride's thoughts the exciting sprinter was ready to re-ignite his spring campaign.

"He (Brown) just said he's back," Pride said.

"He'll go around in the Premiere Stakes now.

"You tend to over-analyse these good horses and I've been a bit concerned about him. But he's been making all the right noises this week, and I'm happy to take him to the races next Saturday (October 6).

"I'd just love some rain. I love seeing him on wet tracks, he's almost unbeatable."

Rain Affair turned in an out-of-character first-up performance when fourth, beaten 4-1/4-lengths, behind stablemate Tiger Tees in the Concorde Stakes (1100m).

He was then scratched from last Saturday's Shorts (1200m) on race morning.

Brown, who has ridden Rain Affair to nine of his 11 wins, was thrilled with the gelding's trial.

"He was great this morning," Brown said.

"In his two trials at Randwick leading into his first-up run he was very relaxed. It obviously wasn't a good sign even though I thought it was at the time.

"He was back to his old self today. Going around to the barriers he was rearing up and he was playing up a little bit at the gates.

"He began well and he ran like he used to."
