John Messara a double winner at Rosehill

Saturday 1 February 2014, 5:47pm

Racing NSW supremo John Messara had a big day out at Rosehill with a winning double courtesy of Woodbine and Rowie.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Woodbine won the opening event on Saturday's program to confirm a path to the Randwick Guineas and a potential boost in his stud value.

A son of Hussonet, Woodbine is out of multiple Group One winner Miss Finland who was also raced by Messara, the proprietor of Arrowfield Stud, and trained by his son Paul.

As a gelding, Rowie's value is in his racing career and the son of Arrowfield stallion Flying Spur took his record to four wins from 17 starts when he stormed home in the 1500m benchmark 78, the final race of the day.

"We've book-ended the program and it's great to get a double," Messara said.

"I'm not sure what the program is for Rowie.

"He's a gelding so I'm a bit more invested in where Woodbine goes but I'm sure we can find nice races for Rowie."

The Wagga Cup is the target for imported gelding Junoob who claimed his first Australian win since joining the Chris Waller stable when he took out the 2000m race.

"His owners are from around Wagga and they are keen to have a horse win the Cup," Waller said.

"This might be the one."
