BRISBANE February 5 AAP - Battled-hardened gelding Dienekes may not be a champion but trainer Bryan Guy believes every stable would love to have him.
The now seven-year-old Dienekes takes on city open company for the first time on Saturday in the TJS Services Open (1600m) at Eagle Farm.
Guy, who continued his good recent run with the win of Lullaby Lady at Doomben on Wednesday, said Dienekes deserved a chance to add a city open company win to his accomplishments.
The gelding, who cost just $11,000, has had 62 starts, won 11 races and been placed 18 times for a total of $234,155 in prize money.
"He has been so consistent throughout his career. He has won on six different tracks and at distances from 1200m to 2000m," Guy said.
"This campaign alone he has won two metropolitan restricted races and run third in the Magic Millions Stayers Cup.
"I think he has won more than $70,000 in prize money this campaign alone."
His apprentice Janette Johnson will continue her association with Dienekes on Saturday and her claim reduces his weight to just 53kg.
Johnson has won five races Dienekes including the Gatton Cup.
"The old boy will be good odds on Saturday but there are a couple who like to lead in the race and he can probably get a nice sit just off the pace," Guy said.
Johnson will also ride Guy's two-year-old Enough, which is owned by his son Dan, and consistent sprinter Florida Fellow.
"Enough trialled well but the time wasn't flash and Florida Fellow has never won at Eagle Farm but they are both nicely drawn and have done well," Guy said.
