I want to train racehorses: Billy Slater

Thursday 6 February 2014, 4:50pm

Life after rugby league for NRL star Billy Slater might include training racehorses.

Australia, Queensland and Melbourne Storm fullback Slater expressed an interest in training at a Racing Victoria (RV) launch at Caulfield on Thursday.

Slater, a former trackwork rider for Gai Waterhouse, rode retired 2009 Cox Plate winner Maldivian as part of the summer-autumn carnival launch.

Slater, his wife Nicole and children Tyla and Jake, have been appointed family ambassadors for `Relaxed Racing', a joint campaign between Racing Victoria, the Melbourne Racing Club and Country Racing Victoria.

Maldivian paraded before guests at the function, but the former Mark Kavanagh-trained galloper only walked and that was fine by Slater.

"I don't think Craig Bellamy (Melbourne Storm coach) would be too happy if I was cantering around Caulfield a month out from our first game," Slater said.

The 30-year-old revealed a desire to have more involvement in racing once he retires.

"I still love the racing industry and I'd certainly like to get back into that once I finish playing football and have a bit more time on my hands," he said.

Everything from breeding to training a couple of horses would interest Slater.

"I don't have an ambition of training a lot of horses, I know how much work has to go into that, but certainly training a couple of my own and if I've bred them certainly I'm going to have a lot more interest in them as well," he said.

"So take a couple of racehorses out to the picnics or the country meets is certainly on my agenda after my football career finishes."
