Jockey John Keating is making progress in the intensive care unit of Melbourne's Alfred Hospital after suffering head injuries in a race fall.
The Victorian Jockeys' Association said Keating's sedation had been reduced and he had taken a few steps, with assistance.
Keating suffered the injuries when he fell in a race at Kyneton last Saturday week.
"His sedation has been cut by the Intensive Care team at the Alfred," a VJA statement said.
"He has made definite improvement. With help, he's talking and taking a few steps.
The VJA said Keating still had a long road ahead in his rehabilitation and recovery.
