The Hawkes Racing team has produced another smart juvenile this season with Gold Force scoring an all-the-way debut win in the $250,000 Inglis Premier at Mornington.
On the day when Hall of Fame trainer John Hawkes celebrated his 65th birthday, Gold Force ($4.60) held the lead in the rich sales-restricted race and took advantage of the track pattern on the day, kicking clear in the straight to win by 2-3/4 lengths over favourite Modoc ($2.30).
The gelding is a close relation to multiple Group One winner Mentality and the gelding's debut win on Wednesday did not surprise his co-trainer Wayne Hawkes.
"He has been pretty bombproof at home," Hawkes said.
Hawkes said he was not sure where the gelding would head next but was delighted to have got the right result on debut in the rich provincial race.
Gold Force is the latest smart juvenile to step out of the Hawkes Racing stable this season having already had winners such as Nostradamus, Invisible and Bugatty, who is an acceptor in Saturday's Group One Lightning Stakes.
On a track favouring leaders, Craig Williams sent Gold Force to the front and was impressed by the strength of the performance by the son of Flying Spur.
"I'm interested to see which path they take with him because whatever he does now is a bonus. He's going to be a lovely three-year-old," Williams said.
Jockey Nash Rawiller said Modoc jumped away shockingly which cost him his chance of victory.
The Paul Perry-trained gelding finished well for second, while Fontein Ruby was another 1-1/4 lengths away third.
"You had to be taken by the way he hit the line on an unsuitable track," Rawiller said.
The Inglis Premier has been won by subsequent Group winners Snitzerland and Twilight Royale in the past two years.
