Jockey Stephen Baster is banking on the addition of blinkers being a key to the chances of Chivalry toppling the favourites in Saturday's $1 million Blue Diamond Stakes.

The Mark Kavanagh-trained colt will wear blinkers and a tongue tie for the first time after he produced a fast-finishing third from the tail of the field in the colts and geldings Prelude last start.

Baster was keen to stick with Chivalry in the Blue Diamond (1200m) and the colt is considered by many to be the main threat to the unbeaten Rubick and Earthquake, the clear top-two in the market.

"His run in the Prelude was sensational, drawing off the track and finishing off strongly," Baster said.

"They have put blinkers and a tongue tie on him this time which I think will help him, especially in a 1200-metre race.

"He's a horse that's going to get over further later, but I think for this grand final it's perfect. He's drawn well and I couldn't really ask for much more."

Kavanagh is chasing his second Blue Diamond win after Undoubtedly raced to victory in 2005.

He said there wasn't a lot of similarities between the pair believing that Chivalry would be better as a three-year-old while Undoubtedly was at his best at two.

"But this bloke is going a bit better than Undoubtedly was at the time. This is just a stronger year," Kavanagh said.

Chivalry came up with barrier five in Tuesday's draw having jumped from barrier 14 in the field of 16 in the Prelude (1100m) won by Rubick.

From the better draw, Baster is not expecting to be spotting the leaders as big a start on Saturday.

"I hope he's closer to the speed because it's going to be hard to win if we're that far back," he said.

"I think the blinkers will spark him up a bit and he can race that bit closer."

Rubick, who was forced to work at both ends of the Prelude last start and was still able to win, is the $2.80 TAB fixed odds favourite to give trainer Gerald Ryan his third Blue Diamond win.

Earthquake, an impressive winner of the fillies Prelude, has drifted from $3 to $3.50 since drawing barrier 15 while Chivalry is a $7.50 chance.

Baster said Rubick and Earthquake were the obvious horses to beat but insisted Chivalry had the talent to be right in the mix.

"It's a very good year but he's a very talented horse," Baster said.
