While the Southern Cross Stakes is an autumn stepping stone for many of his rivals, it is a chance for Dances On Stars to snare a first Group win.
Connections of the four-year-old do not have lofty ambitions for the consistent gelding who has been placed four times in Group races won by Sizzling, one of the leading chances in Saturday's Futurity Stakes at Caulfield.
Dances On Stars' trainer Gerald Ryan will be in Melbourne to oversee Rubick, favourite for the Blue Diamond Stakes.
But he will be keeping a keen eye on Sydney and Dances On Stars who gets into the Group Three Southern Cross (1200m) on the limit 54kg at Randwick, a 6.5kg advantage against topweight Toydini.
Dances On Stars won the Carrington Stakes (1100m) on New Year's Day and finished second to Emblems in the Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) at Gosford, carrying 57.5kg in both Listed races.
"We are picking races as we can because he is a little hard to place," Ryan said.
"He is a genuine horse and he went to the Carrington fresh which wasn't what he has usually done but it worked.
"We have given him a freshen-up for this. He's well weighted under the conditions of the race and gets his chance.
"He's not Group One horse but he is very good at this level."
Terravista is the TAB's early $3 favourite. Toydini is at $6.50 and Dances On Stars is a $7 chance.
Trainer Guy Walter has ambitions for Toydini including the Doncaster and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, races that could also be on the horizon for Terravista.
Jay Ford rides Dances On Stars and also the Ryan-trained two-year-old, You Da One who makes her debut over 1200 metres.
