Trainer Robbie Laing has not closed the door on Polanski's racetrack career just yet.

The Victoria Derby winner suffered a serious leg injury in Saturday's Group One Futurity Stakes but the damage was not as severe as Laing had first feared with the trainer originally believing the colt had fractured a pastern.

He later revealed there was fractures but considerable soft tissue damage.

A twitter post from Robbie Laing Racing on Monday afternoon indicated they would hold off on any decision on retirement.

"Polanski has deep soft tissue damage and we await further veterinary advice before confirming if he will race again so not over just yet," it said.

Polanski was one of the feel-good stories of last year's spring carnival.

The three-year-old, bought for $4000 as a yearling, emerged as a top-class galloper with three straight stakes wins culminating in Group One Victoria Derby success at Flemington.

He was favourite for the Australian Derby in Sydney until Saturday's injury.
