A year of frustration was swept away when Whatawaltz scored a runaway win at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.
Whatawaltz ($3.80) lived up to his impressive trial form when he beat Warrior Sky ($8) by 2-1/4 lengths with a half-head to the favourite Lucky Lucre ($3.50) in the Grinders Coffee Plate (1200m).
The gelding was formerly trained by Grahame Begg in Sydney but was sold to Gold Coast trainer Gillian Heinrich in March last year.
Heinrich said Whatawaltz would have won his maiden long before Wednesday but for a frustrating run of bad luck.
"We gave him a spell and he trialled in September when he was impressive," she said.
"But he banged his head and we had to staple him up before another spell.
"Then we got him back trialled him again and he won that trial really well.
"But then at later track work he threw the jockey and did lap of the track."
She said connections had held their breath until Wednesday's race finally started without any further bad luck.
Whatawaltz was bought cheaply by Heinrich's husband Hoss despite the gelding being by champion sire Redoute's Choice out Just Dancing, winner of the 2006 Group Two Furious Stakes.
Heinrich and winning jockey Tim Bell made it a double when impressive three-year-old Primal Fear won the Quest Breakfast Creek Maiden (1200m).
Primal Fear will now head straight to Saturday three-year-old class.
"He should have been in the finish in the Listed Ken Russell Memorial two-year-old race last winter," Heinrich said.
"We have had a few minor problems with him but he is spot on now."
