Atlante isn't as good as his famous stablemate It's A Dundeel but he doesn't have to be to win the Hobartville Stakes at Rosehill.
As such, the Murray Baker-trained three-year-old will carry much more expectation into Saturday's Group Two than It's A Dundeel did in a vintage renewal of the race last year.
In his only defeat against his own age during the 2013 Sydney autumn carnival, It's A Dundeel ran fourth as a $16 chance when Pierro, Rebel Dane and Proisir filled the Hobartville placings.
Winner of the Group One New Zealand Guineas at his most recent start, Atlante is the equal second favourite on Saturday behind fellow Kiwi El Roca.
And while stable bragging rights over It's A Dundeel might be up for grabs, Baker says bookmakers rating Atlante so highly does not disguise the task in front of the horse.
"The race is probably not as good this year but it's always hard to win. Good horses win the Hobartville," he said.
Numbers-wise, Baker is overseeing his strongest team of Australian carnival horses with It's A Dundeel set to resume in the Chipping Norton Stakes and Derby hopeful Show The World earmarked to run against Atlante in the Randwick Guineas.
A regular visitor to Australia since the early 1980s, Baker rarely returns to New Zealand empty-handed.
With It's A Dundeel second favourite to win the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Show The World on the third line of Australian Derby betting, few trainers are better placed going into a revamped Sydney racing carnival.
But there is a hint of caution about his chances of making an immediate impact with Atlante, based on his horse's liking for more ground and the presence of El Roca.
"My horse will probably be best suited to a mile but he's fresh," Baker said.
"And El Roca is trained in Cambridge so I see him most mornings. He's fast."
