Goldies Return foils Eagle Farm plunge

Wednesday 5 March 2014, 3:48pm

Goldies Return proved size doesn't matter when she upset a big plunge at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.

The Liam Birchley-trained First Draft was backed from $5 into $2.10 but had to be satisfied with a length second to Goldies Return in the Quest Breakfast Creek/Brisbane Bloodstock Handicap.

Breeder and owner Eugene Nolan said Goldies Return was sold at the Magic Millions sales last year but was returned to him when the buyers thought she was too small.

Nolan then decided to race Goldies Return himself and sent her to trainer Les Ross at Eagle Farm.

"She is a half-sister to the good wet-track horse Diet so we knew she would handle the rain-affected track today," Nolan said.

Goldies Return picked up a QTIS bonus and a Brisbane Bloodstock bonus for her win lifting first prize to almost $20,000.

Glen Colless made a rare appearance riding for Ross after Brad Stewart and Jackson Morris were unable to take the mount.

"He is hard to get but I would put Glen on anything he is such a good rider," Ross said.

Meanwhile, the Ontrack Thoroughbreds syndicate continued its recent run of good luck with favourite Warrior Sky ($1.95) but needed the stewards intervention.

In a slogging finish, Ipswich galloper Beldan ($4.60) beat Warrior Sky by a half neck in the Hidden Dragon @ Lyndhurst Handicap.

However, Michael Cahill fired in a protest alleging Beldan moved out in the final 100m and bumped him which cost Warrior Sky victory.

Stewards took only a minute to uphold the objection.
