Solicit stronger but not smarter

Saturday 8 March 2014, 3:37pm

Solicit might not be the smartest horse in Mat Ellerton's stable, but she may well be one of the best.

And after her victory in the Group Two Kewney Stakes (1400m), she is also one of the most valuable among the dozens in the collection of her owner David Moodie.

Solicit showed plenty of potential last spring, winning twice and running a place at her only other four starts before returning to the track last month with a first-up win.

"She's a lot stronger than she was in the spring," Ellerton said.

"But she's still a bit dumb.

"She doesn't know how to use her stride ... to change legs when she needs to, things like that."

But Ellerton isn't complaining.

"She was up there all the way. She was there to be beaten," he said.

After she began fast from her wide gate, Damian Lane was able to steady Solicit in the middle stages and then get her moving again from the 300m.

Almost as soon as her rivals threatened her, Solicit ($1.70 fav) started moving through her gears and was going better than anything on the line, scoring by a length from Marianne ($7) with a short half-head to Suavito ($17) in third place.

Along with most of Saturday's Flemington winners, she will head to The Championships in Sydney where she is entered for both Classics and the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).

"The Oaks is the target and we'll probably stick to that," Ellerton said.

Solicit is the $6 equal favourite for the Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick on April 19 alongside New Zealand Derby runner-up Rising Romance.
